It’s safe to say that I’ve been adding a more than a few DIY projects to my list than I really ever have. I’ve never been one to really reach for a DIY project, but in the last few weeks I feel as if I’m entering my own “DIY era”!
Earlier this week I was browsing around Hobby Lobby and stumbled upon their pottery and vase section. I hadn’t really looked at it before, but was overall really impressed with their selection. I was thinking of picking up a vase or two, and then I saw the 50% off sign… I immediately went to grab a cart and stock up! Among the vases I selected was a terracotta vase that I liked the overall shape of, but not so much the color. I decided I would transform it into my own version of an aged, coffee brown vase. Here is a look at the before and after:

In the process of aging this vase I took a similar route that I did with the terracotta pumpkin I made a couple of weeks ago- using paint and baking soda! As simple as that. I gathered three different brown paint colors. Starting with the lightest brown of the bunch, I mixed in about two tablespoons of baking soda to thicken the paint and give it some grit and texture, and then painted the entire vase the light brown color. I did the same with the medium brown tone as well as the darkest brown of them all. I wanted to layer the colors on top of each other to give dimension and a sense of weatheredness.
As I went on with each paint layer, I added more and more baking soda to thicken the paint as I went. The last layer of paint, being the thickest and darkest in color, was applied all over the vase. While the vase began to dry, I stippled the paint brush around the vase to add more texture while exposing the layers beneath the darkest color and top layer. Then allow to dry for 12 hours. As easy as that!
Please let me know if you try out this DIY for yourself!
