DIY Terracotta Jack-O’-Lantern

08.29.23

Since last year I have had my eye on the terracotta jack-o’-lanterns from Pottery Barn. However, when I went to buy them every time they were sold out. Right now you can find them on resell websites like Ebay and Poshmark upmarked anywhere between $200-$350. While I love the look of them, I was not about to pay that price. Especially when you can just make your own! I’m by no means a DIY person. I like crafts and giving things my own personal touch, but when it comes to interiors and interior styling I usually would rather pay for pieces that I enjoy versus trying to remake them. However, I’m SO happy with how these terracotta jack-o’-lanterns turned out!

Here are the terracotta pumpkins from Pottery Barn:

What you’ll need to make the jack-o’-lanterns:

-Acrylic Paint (an orange, brown, white)

-Air-Dry Clay for the stem

-Baking Soda

-All Purpose Flour

-Jack-o-lantern

Step One: Form the air-dry clay in the shape that you want the stem to look like. I like the more wiry and skinny looking stems.

Step Two: Mix your paint colors until you get the tone similar to terracotta. You can add the baking soda right into your paint to get that grittiness and texture right when you go in on the first layer. Paint the entire jack-o’-lantern until opaque.

Step Three: Sprink some more baking soda on the jack-o’-lantern to add more texture and paint over it. This will be the second coat of paint / baking soda all over the jack-o’-lantern.

Step Four: Once the paint is almost dry, but still a bit tacky, sprinkle all purpose flour all over the jack-o’-lantern. Take a fluffy brush to the pumpkin and dust around the flour until it resembles the terracotta look.

This was such a fun and easy project! The before and after speaks for itself, but I can’t wait to do this with some more jack-o’-lanterns!
