What I Read in September

3 OCT

September was full of great reads! I got to some books that have been on my list for quite some time and enjoyed them immensely. Let’s jump in:

EVERY LAST SECRET by A.R. Torre 4 / 5 stars

This one had me turning the pages late into the night, I just HAD to know what happened next. I love plots about wealthy families and all their messy drama. This psychological thriller follows two couples who live next to each other. One wife works for the husband of the other, and secrets unfold from there. This book had my jaw dropped during most of the story. I enjoyed the pacing of this as well as the multiple POVs. A great read to get yourself out of a slump!

THE SEVEN HUSBANDS OF EVELYN HUGO by Taylor Jenkins Reid 5 / 5 stars

This. Book. I know this novel has been raved about for years- maybe that’s why I was so hesitant on picking it up? Regardless, Taylor Jenkins Reid hit it out of the park with this one. It is worth every bit of the hype that it has accumulated. I fell in love with Evelyn and her story. The old Hollywood setting captivated me from beginning to end, making the story all the more magical with the glitz and glamour. But beyond the facade of money and fame, there is a sense of empathy for Evelyn as you watch her struggle through scandal, pain, and loss throughout her life. The mystery of the story wraps together beautifully making everything come full circle. I wanted to savor every word of this novel and devour it all the same. This one will always have a place on my shelf.

FOR YOUR OWN GOOD by Samantha Downing 3 / 5 stars

A bitter English teacher, with a dairy problem and who has a hobby of growing poisonous plants in his backyard, looks to teach all of his over privileged students and peers a lesson they soon won’t forget. This Dark Academic novel will have you on the edge of your seat wondering who is going to be punished next. Told from multiple POVs, we follow along a range of characters as they try to figure out who is killing off Belmont Academy’s attendants. Perfect for reading in the fall, right in time for school, the dark and twisted ways of Teddy the English teacher will have you turning each page dying to know what happens next.

THE GIRL WHO DRANK THE MOON by Kelly Barnhill 4 / 5 stars

This magical tale about an irregular witch was charming and poetic wrapped together in a spooky bow. The pages are flooded with folkloric characters such as a swap monster, a pocket-sized dragon, wizards and an evil sorrow eater! This whimsical middle grade had me feeling like a kid again, completely spellbound by its pages. You’ll be cheering for your favorite characters as they take on what has been haunting the people of the Protectorate in a classic match up of good verses evil. Beautifully written with its enchanting atmosphere, this feel-good read will get you into the spooky mindset perfect for fall!
