Since moving into our new house last March we have had quite the long list of renovations and projects to tackle. Our home was built in 2011, so the updates we want to make aren’t anything structural, just mainly cosmetic.
Before we moved in, we had our house painted and the floors redone. The overall feel of the house was very much that warm, orange feel from 2010. I wanted to give it a fresher feel with new paint and engineered hardwoods throughout. Since then we have added a few furniture pieces to our living room and bedrooms, although there’s still more to be done.
You know that saying, “A painter’s house is never painted.”? The same can be said for interior design. I feel like when you are in the design world and it comes to your own home, it’s more difficult to make those interior decisions. Not because you can’t envision it or because you lack that creative grasp for your own living space, it’s simply just hard to make up your mind- this is my problem at least. There are so many different directions I could take any space in my home and I would love it, it just comes down to what feels right and what will I love to be surrounded by the most? I can easily pick out those pieces for others but, when it comes to my home, it’s much more difficult for me. I decided to tackle these indecisive choices by narrowing our projects for the year and solely focusing on particular spaces.
Here are a few projects I would like to tackle in 2023, big and small:
1. KITCHEN RENO
I absolutely love our kitchen. Well, I love the bones of our kitchen. Having a kitchen island has totally transformed how we spend time in our home. There’s so much more space to cook and gather together. The countertops need to be updated throughout the kitchen and the cabinets need to be painted. I would love to rework the lighting as well, but I’m sure we will have to see what exactly we are able to do there, but ideally source some fixtures for over the sink as well as over the island.
2. LIVING ROOM REFRESH
Our living room is in need of a little face lift. This includes sources art, chandelier, a new rug and a new coffee table, as well as reworking the layout with our couch (and maybe even getting a new couch). This also includes styling with throw pillows and some additions of greenery! I’m in no way a plant mom but might look into a faux tree, lol.
3. MASTER BEDROOM SOURCING
We recently got a new dresser and bedding for our master bedroom and it just reminded me how much I want to style and source more pieces for this space. I’m a firm believer in investing in pieces/spaces where you spend most of your time. With our bedroom being one of those spaces, I’d love to dedicate more of our budget and time into finishing and adding to our master bedroom. This includes new nightstands, art, new curtains, and throw pillows.
4. HALLWAY GALLERY WALL
There has been a piece of art leaning against our hallway for what feels like forever. It hasn’t made onto the wall yet because I know that I don’t want it to live there. I would love to incorporate a floor to ceiling gallery wall at the end of our hallway. It’s a decent amount of wall space but it’s not large enough to place a credenza or piece of furniture. So I think a statement gallery wall would be perfect.
5. EXPANDING THE DRIVEWAY
A more logical / practical project we need to tackle is expanding our driveway. Right now we have a single driveway that is long enough to fit two cars. We are looking to expand that to more of a “Y” shaped driveway to fit five cars. This will depend on how far over we can take the driveway to expand due to the location of our water meter. I’m SO looking forward to doing this so we no longer have to play musical cars!
I’m really looking forward to tackling this list this year. There will be plenty of mood and inspiration boards along the way, so keep an eye out!
